Originally starting as a performer, chadia continuously found themselves in stories that positioned them in a minstrel performance that fit a \u201crespectable\u201d or palatable version of blackness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trying to survive as an artist has become about either paying the bills and succumbing to these transgressions against them, or taking the financial risk of investing their time into writing the underrepresented narratives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Narratives that chadia would love to perform as a black, queer, neurodivergent actor. They want work that challenges societal norms and their own values, instead of work that consistently has them teaching the \u201cblack experience\u201d for the benefit of mostly white audiences. chadia realized that in order to work in an environment where they could thrive, be well paid, and create with artistic liberty appreciated for the complexity of what they had to offer, chadia had to create it for themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They established their &#8220;one person company with no money&#8221; DISSRUPTIV THEATRE.In 2022, they wrote, produced, directed, designed and performed their show &#8220;NIGGAS IN PONTREAL: whose to blame&#8221; at Montreal Fringe. The cast was led by ALL Black femmes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0chadia is focused on creating, collaborating, and supporting works that instigate conversations and challenge societal norms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A playwright, director, and singer, chadia also showcased their first play, &#8220;niggas in pontreal: whose to blame,&#8221; at MLTFringe in 2022, where they were the director, co-producer, and one of the performers. The play was nominated for three Frankie Awards, including<\/span> Most Promising English Text, Best English Comedy, and Best English Production<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s taken them some time to curate this world that tackles the \u2018pop girly\u2019 racism Canada\u2013 Quebec seems to fermante. One of the reasons why it took them so long to write this project, was the looming question of \u201chow can I talk about blackface without it at the expense of my community?\u201d And, in ACT II, chadia will explore that question.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This project questions how justice is represented through art, the role of violence in anti-Black narratives, and how it can be depicted thoughtfully and with compassion. It challenges whether violence is necessary in storytelling and whether it can be shown through the Black body without harming the Black psyche.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project is written for Black people\u2014Black readers, actors, directors, and audiences. By ensuring that characters are played only by Black performers, the work deepens its exploration of the Black experience. It also raises important questions about the responsibilities of playwrights to ensure that stories are told with care, truth, and empathy.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div><\/div><!--close column table wrapper.
