Edith Brunette

Edith Brunette is a multidisciplinary artist, researcher, and writer, in no particular order. Her research carves paths at the murky intersections of art and politics, dominant discourses, and the practices that challenge them. She enjoys writing, dancing, and making art collectively, striving to transpose these pleasures into her work. In her spare time, she took a detour into political science and defended a dissertation on conceptions of freedom and the political engagement of Canadian artists (University of Ottawa). And when she really has no time left, she organizes protests and publishes manifestos with the Grande mobilisation pour les arts au Québec (GMAQ).

Une tragédie musicale entrepreneuriale

Une Tragédie musicale entrepreneuriale is an experimental performative work inspired by an iconoclastic and political tradition of musical theatre. Set in a vague yet near future, the working conditions of artists—and living conditions more broadly—have deteriorated, exacerbating competitiveness, excessive desires, and precarity. Various unusual behaviours begin to emerge, where psychotic breakdowns intersect with political action: cannibalistic consumption rituals involving patrons, kidnappings of real estate speculators, and other extreme practices.

Une Tragédie explores the affective dimension of cultural workers’ labour within an extractivist and ultra-competitive economy, amid ecological and communal collapse. With this underlying question: how do we survive in this context, and how close are we to collective psychosis?
