Flame

Informed by waacking, house, and physical theatre, Flame explores the expressive and subversive potential of queer bodies. He explores somatization through dance and movement, pushes the limits of physical performance, and engages in dialogue with trance states.

Montreal-based artist of Franco-Egyptian descent, his work delves into the fragmentation of memory and identity narratives and the distortion of dramaturgical space-time. Dreams, memories, and the imagination are his preferred tools for choreographic research and for continually reconstructing reality.

Flame develops Al Warda as an autofiction in movement made of traumas, dreams, and memories. He crafts a techno-poetic space where the boundaries between reality and imagination are porous, where roses have no roots but bloom nonetheless. Al Warda is also a search for identity, confronted with exile, abandonment, and uprooting. The project brings political and family archives into dialogue with archives buried within the body, in an attempt to understand how the past speaks to the present, how violence is transmitted across generations. Drawing on the codes of cinema, performance, and dance-theatre, Flame creates a fragmented and unstable space-time, in which the dancer’s body loses itself, and perhaps, finds itself again.
