Sam I Am Montolla started dancing at the tender age of 5 and her love of music has brought her to singing and songwriting. Through dance, she has traveled internationally for Hip Hop and Waacking. In her music journey, Soul, RnB, Hip Hop, and Funk is where she likes to play, not forgetting her Caribbean heritage. She continues to mentor in Street Dance; as a certified Sound Healer/Therapist, she incorporates her knowledge of sound. She is now part of the CCOV (Centre Création O Vertigo) team as Artistic Curator for 2023-2026.

Where Me and My Father Reside/Untitled

This is the exploration of the connection between father and daughter with the steel percussion the Iron unique to Trinidadian music and culture. This is a multidisciplinary work, with sound, rhythm, movement and storytelling that touches on family dynamics and the question between attachment vs. connection. Memories, intergenerational ties and culture play as themes in this research.

This work was inspired from the desire for transmission of stories and traditions that a father could give, building a bond and a view into Caribbean life. The realization of parents and children getting older and wanting to document these moments for self-discovery and remembrance. This is a work that can break out into many different works; the themes contained can be pieces by themselves. Through this residency process, we will see how the branches grow.
