Alegría Gobeil works with practices considered self-destructive, unproductive, unlivable, contagious and unsurvivable. Drawing from performance art methodologies and critiques of psychopathologization, their practice engages with the erotics of counter-anamnesis.Their indisciplinary work has been presented across national and international contexts in live art, visual arts, and literature.
Except the bloodline is a logorrheic performance project at the fringes of body art. Alegría Gobeil lets themself be traversed by a multitude of suicidal figures that split, contaminate one another, until they dissolve any notion of origin—whether medical, biographical, historical, or fictional. Through this embodied inquiry, the artist investigates the psychic reach of this hegemonic figure: the repulsion, fascination, and projections it provokes. Their body becomes a site for the repetition of collective fears and fantasies. Informed by critical perspectives on the psychiatrization of suffering and the logics of profitability that govern our relationships, this interdisciplinary theater research examines the erotic and the political that can unfold within the oblique refusal of self-narration—bringing forth a desiring protean figure.
